Paulo Rios Filho (1985) is a composer who writes music through subtraction. Sounds and music from northeastern Brazil, historical recordings, and traditional and urban voices are subjected to successive layers of filtering and lapidation until only traces remain — a ghostly persistence of their origins. The result is a practice of a practice of spectral devoration: a search for the expressive residues of reference sounds, impregnating them with earth and dust, diluting or thickening their rituals and memories until other sonorities become entangled with them — unheard-of textures, diffuse allusions, quotation, and bricolage coexisting within the same inventive space.
His works have been commissioned and premiered by ensembles such as Ensemble Modern (Germany), Nieuw Ensemble (Netherlands), International Contemporary Ensemble — ICE (USA), OpenSoundOrchestra (Russia), and Ensemble Plurisons (Brazil), and performed at festivals and concert series in Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Spain, Russia, Portugal, and the United States.
He holds a doctorate in Music Composition from the Federal University of Bahia and is tenured professor of composition at the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), where he leads the research group CM.ÊPA! Paulo Rios Filho (1985) é um compositor que escreve música por subtração. Sons e músicas do Nordeste do Brasil, gravações históricas e vozes tradicionais e urbanas são submetidos a sucessivas camadas de filtragem e lapidação até que restem apenas vestígios — uma persistência fantasmática de suas origens. O resultado é uma prática de devoração espectral: uma busca pelos resíduos expressivos dos sons de referência, impregnando-os de terra e poeira, diluindo ou adensando seus rituais e memórias até que outras sonoridades se enredem com eles — texturas inauditas, alusões difusas, citação e bricolagem coexistindo em um mesmo espaço inventivo.
Suas obras têm sido encomendadas e estreadas por grupos como o Ensemble Modern (Alemanha), Nieuw Ensemble (Holanda), International Contemporary Ensemble — ICE (EUA), OpenSoundOrchestra (Rússia), Ensemble Plurisons (Brasil) e apresentadas em festivais e séries de concertos na Alemanha, Holanda, Noruega, Suíça, Espanha, Rússia, Portugal e Estados Unidos.
Doutor em Música (Composição) pela Universidade Federal da Bahia, é professor de composição na Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM), onde lidera o grupo de pesquisa CM.ÊPA! (CNPq) e dirige o Ensemble e o Festival Novas Tríades. Partituras distribuídas pela BabelScores (França).
